Arrest made after world's smallest park is 'occupied'

PORTLAND, Ore. - The world's smallest park, which is in downtown Portland, was 'occupied' on Friday and police even made an arrest.

Cameron Scott Whitten, 20, was taken into custody at Mill Ends Park (located at Southwest Naito Boulevard and Taylor Street ) after he refused to get out of the street and onto the sidewalk. Police said he had been given numerous warnings.

Whitten was actually part of a small group of people who were demonstrating at the park. He was taken into custody on a charge of interfering with a police officer and was booked into the Multnomah County Jail. Police said they had to handcuff him and carry him to a patrol car when he slumped to the ground and refused to walk with officers.

This isn't the first time Whitten has been arrested in connection with the Occupy movement. He was also taken into custody when police cleared out Lownsdale and Chapman parks and later, Jamison Square in the Pearl District.

Although Whitten somehow keeps landing in jail, he does have other plans that are more lawful. You see the young man wants to throw his hat in the ring for the mayor's race and he even filed the paperwork to do so.

ABOUT MILL ENDS PARK

You can't escape the humor of Mill Ends Park being 'occupied.' The park, which was recognized in 1971 by the Guinness Book of Records as the 'World's Smallest Park,'  is just two feet across.

The park was created decades ago by Dick Fagan, a columnist for The Oregon Journal who noticed a hole in the concrete dividing the lanes of Front Avenue and decided to plant some flowers there to spruce it up. He then named the little spot after the column he wrote.

Earlier this year, we featured Mill Ends Park as part of our weekly parks series. Follow the link to learn more about the history of the park and its notoriety in the city.
