Muslim groups speak out against downtown bomb attempt
Events, News

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Muslim American and Arab American leaders of Oregon and Southwest Washington are meeting Saturday night in downtown Portland to "condemn in the strongest terms any planned attack on innocent people," says spokesman Jesse Day.

The meeting, which is part of the Muslim Educational Trust, comes the day after an alleged attempted terror attack on the Portland tree-lighting ceremony at Pioneer Square. Somali-born Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a 19 year old who briefly attended classes at Oregon State University and reportedly went to a Beaverton high school, was arrested after authorities say he set off a fake bomb in a van parked near the square.

The meeting is Saturday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m. It is being held at the front steps of Portland City Hall, 1221 S.W. 4th Ave.

"Sometimes individuals will take things to an extreme level..." said Iman Mikal Shabazz, of the Oregon Islamic Chaplains Organization, at Saturday's meeting. "We as a community strongly, unequivocally condemn this kind of act -- for whatever reason."

He went on to say that in America, including Portland, "we have due process, and we have a vehicle in which we can express our discontent. And it is not through these types of means."

He went on to say that he is grateful to the authorities for keeping people safe.
